Sandwich Bay near Deal, Kent
Sandwich is perhaps most renowned amongst those who play Golf rather than those who are in to fishing thanks to the world famous Royal St George golf course. This is however a fantastic area to explore for sea fishing. With good numbers of Cod caught during the winter months and rays caught during the summer months this is a fantastic shore fishing location. This is perhaps not the ideal area for those who are new to the sport but for those who have been doing it for a while this can be a prolific sea fishing location.
Summer Species: Thornback rays, smoothhounds, Dover sole, eels and bass
Winter Species: Codling, whiting and flatties
Bait: Sand eel, bluey, mackerel, peeler crabs, yellow tail lug and ragworm
Tactics: During the summer months and in the spring anglers will often target the rays here. Large mackerel, sandeel or bluey baits are preferred, mounted on a Pennell style rig with either 4/0 or 5/0 hooks. It is important to fish at range here as the beach is not the deepest and the better fish seem to be further out. You can also fish with worm baits on simple flapper style rigs for most other species during the summer such as Sole. In the winter big baits again are preferred to try and catch the Codling. Again distance is required, and try to fish when the water is quite coloured for the best results.
Getting there: From Deal take the A258 and follow the signs for Sandwich Bay. This popular mark is situated north of Deal behind the Royal Cinque Ports golf course. It can be reached by a right of way at the Chequers pub or by following the sea wall at Deal.
