The Admiralty Pier, Dover

The Admiralty Pier, Dover

The Admiralty Pier is a long granite structure famous for its cod fishing during the winter months. There is a large extension to the end of the pier (the second half) and this is commonly regarded as the best spot for cod, although not advised for novice anglers due to the strong tides and winds here. The fishing on the pier is run by the Dover SAA who will offer advice and take bookings for the pier.

Summer Species: Bass, mackerel, garfish, pouting, Pollack, scad, bream, gurnard, plaice, wrasse, mullet and smoothhounds

Winter Species: Codling, whiting and flatfish

Bait: Peeler crabs, sand eels, ragworms, squid, lugworms and mackerel

Tactics: The best method commonly regarded here is to fish a long flowing trace with either a single hook or Pennell rig arrangement. The key is to not get carried away with casting to far as the fish often cling to the cover close to the pier. Use a heavy lead 6oz or more to hold bottom in the strong tides and fish from high tide down 3 hours for what many believe to offer the best results. Codling are the main target in winter with peeler, lugworm and squid being the preferred baits, whereas in the summer the bass fishing can be very good, with either fish or worm baits fished close in to the structure.

Getting there: Dover is accessible via the M2/A2 or M20/A20. Take the third exit on the second roundabout from the A2. There is plenty of safe parking around the pier entrance.
