Fishing marks in Falmouth

Falmouth Cornwall  is a beautiful south coast seaside town. Situated in Cornwall it nestles at the mouth of the estuary of the river Fal. Falmouth provides a large number of excellent fishing locations. I have included some of my favourite spots.

The Prince of Wales Pier, Falmouth

Falmouth Pier is an excellent location for anglers of abilities. The easy access of the pier and simple style of fishing that can be employed here makes it an excellent location for family’s looking to get in to fishing with the chance to catch a number of micro species. This is a very popular location for fisherman and crab fishing during the summer month when the pier can become very busy. If you do want a bit of peace and quiet it is best to fish the pier at night on a flooding tide for the best sport.

Summer Species: Bass. Pollack, wrasse, mackerel, garfish, eels, mullet, scad and pouting

Winter Species: Flounder, whiting, pouting and rare codling

Bait: Ragworm, lugworm, mackerel, peeler crab and lures.

Tactics: Float fishing is a great way to fish the pier for all manner of species. For the wrasse, pollack and other micro species use a running float fished to a stop knot and adjust your depth accordingly with ragworm for bait. For the mackerel and garfish you can use a similar set up but fished a lot shallower with mackerel strip for bait (evening is best). Lure fishing or LRF is becoming more and more popular and this is an excellent mark to try this technique out on. During the winter fish over the clean ground off the pier using worm and fish baits on two or three hook flapper style rigs.

Getting there: Once you have arrived in Falmouth follow signs for the front or the quay and you cannot miss the pier. Pay and display parking is available close by.

Pendennis Point and Pendennis Castle are popular tourist attractions in the summer months and with stunning views back to Falmouth and across the mouth of the Estuary you can see exactly why. Like most of the Cornish coast this stretch of coast is beautiful and rugged and as a result you will all the usual species associated with rocky ground. This is a great Spring and summer fishing location with a variety of species caught using a number of tactics.

Summer Species: Bass. Pollack, wrasse, mackerel, garfish, eels, mullet, scad and pouting

Winter Species: Flounder, whiting, pouting and rare codling

Bait: Ragworm, lugworm, mackerel, peeler crab and lures.

Tactics: In the summer you have the choice of fishing tight to the bottom with worm of fish baits to target the wrasse, bream and giltheads. The alternative is to lure fish for the Pollack and bass also found close in to the shore. Float fished mackerel and worms will also work for garfish, mackerel, wrasse and pollack. In the winter fish scratching rigs for flounders, whiting, pouting and anything else in the area. Spring can produce good numbers of Plaice in clear conditions on the smaller tides.
