Where to fish in and around Clevedon
Clevedon Pier is one of the most popular Bristol Channel fishing marks and certainly one of the most popular fishing locations in Somerset. A great venue all year round with great accessibility whilst throwing up a really good head of bass and smoothhounds in the summer and cod and whiting in the winter. Club meets do regularly happen on the pier so speak to the local tackle shops to obtain the best availability on the pier. Be sure to bring a drop night for most species as the chance of a double figure fish all year round is fairly high.
Summer Species: Bass, rays, mackerel, smoothhound and sole
Winter Species: Cod, whiting, pouting, flounder and strap congers
Bait: Lugworm, squid, peeler crab, mackerel, sandeel, bluey and ragworm
Tactics: For the bass during the summer try large peeler baits or mackerel baits fished close the structure of the pier on long flowing traces. The bait of choice for smoothhounds has to be peeler or hardback crab fished on a size 3/0 hook on a running ledger style rig fished at a decent range. The rays will fall to sandeel, mackerel or bluey all fished on Pennell rigs at range. In the winter cod are the main target and are caught fairly regularly each year. Large cocktail baits mounted on a Pennell sytle rig are best, with crab, bluey, squid and black lugworm cocktails being the baits of choice.
Getting there: Once you have entered Clevedon it is fairly straightforward to find your way to the water’s edge, park, and then find your way to the pier.
