Having lived and spent a lot of time in Cardiff I have grown to know the surrounding areas very well. The coast line here runs along the great River Severn and for that reason the sport can be amazing if you catch it right.

Below I have included what i consider to be the top fishing locations of this area. I hope this information serves you well.

Bendrick Rock, Barry

Bendrick Rock is a real anglers hotspot. Situated just east of Barry lighthouse these ledges provide the perfect habitat for all manor of species. The fishing here extends all year round with codling in the winter and bass in the summer. The area also has easy access and is close to several good tackle stores.

Summer Species: Conger eels, dogfish, rockling, silver eels, bass, flounders, mullet and occasional thornback ray

Winter Species: Cod and Whiting

Bait: Black Lug and Squid cocktails, ragworm, mackerel, squid and Sand eels.

Local Tackle Shops: Barry Angling Centre, CF62 6HD tel: 01446 747638 or Aspinall’s Angling CF63 4LU, tel: 01446 742645

Getting there: Follow A4267 coast road from Penarth to Sully, or from Barry towards the nearby chemical works, using either the A4055 or A4231. There is a small roundabout near the chemical works entrance. Take the coast road (Hayes road) past the access point for Sully slipway, and then the children’s hospital. Turn left at the next roundabout and keep left until you arrive alongside a disused factory adjacent to the rock.
